In my much younger days, I had a significant other (translate that to–I was living with a guy) who loved to get tatoo’d. When I met him, he had a couple and when he wanted another one, he put my name on his arm in a prominent place so all could see that he loved me. I was 18 years old and extremely impressed. I just knew that this person was the man of my dreams. Why? Because he was willing to go through the hurting of putting my name on his arm. In those days, it was somewhat painful..even to watch. It was red and raw for a few more days afterwards. That meant that he loved me forever. It was permanent, after all.
But, on his other arm, he also had another tatoo, two actually. The first one said “Born to Lose”. It did not really hit me then the significance of that particular tatoo as opposed to the other one with my name on it. It did not get through to me that THIS tatoo was the one that wrapped up his whole life. This was the way he thought about life. That was his whole attitude. Is that how you feel? Read on.
Then, he had one more tatoo. It was of a black cat, completely filled in. That had to hurt a lot when he got it. I asked him about that one but not until I had been with him for almost two years did he tell me about it. The black cat tatoo was covering his ex-wife’s name. My world shifted in that moment. All my safety left. Nothing was permanet. He taught me that. Not long after that, we split up. I am quite sure that he put some huge tatoo over my name too. Nothing was permanent with him except “Born to Lose”.
During my prayer time today, I was reminded of the scripture concerning the Lord putting us into His Hands:
Isaiah 49:16 Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.
This scripture is in King James version and might not be easy to understand so I went to another version (New King James):
(Isa 49:16) Behold, I have carved you on the palms of My hands; your walls are forever before Me.
Okay, now I can see what it means more clearly. Today, God is telling us that He has chosen to put us, no…ENGRAVED (carved) us, into the palms of His Hands. What does that tell you? It’s permanent! Unlike my significant other who had tatoos over tatoos and had no committment at all, God did not just tatoo Himself, He carved my name into His palm where He could see it continually. God is not imperfect so the engraving must be there for all time. It cannot be changed. God does not change (and Jesus is His Son. Heb 13:8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday and today and forever.).
When He looks into His Hands, He is reminded of us. We are not forgotten, no matter what is happening. Trust me, this was really important to me today. Is that important to you too? What is going on in your life right now? Do you feel forgotten by God? Maybe you think that He went golfing instead of hearing your plea to Him? No way! He is right there waiting patiently for you to talk to Him, be with Him, love Him, ask Him like you would a Daddy. He is your Father!
